WBUR Features Gradient’s Window Heat Pumps in Boston Public Housing Pilot

Gradient is proud to be featured in WBUR coverage highlighting a pioneering pilot project with the Boston Housing Authority (BHA), which is installing our window-mounted heat pumps in public housing.

At one of Boston’s oldest public housing communities — the 100-unit Hassan Apartments in Mattapan — Gradient’s plug-in window units are being deployed as a low-cost, easy-to-install electrification solution that provides both heating and cooling using a standard 120 V outlet. Unlike traditional systems that often require significant construction, electrical upgrades, or ductwork, these units install quickly with minimal disruption — helping reduce cost, complexity, and carbon emissions for residents and property owners alike.

According to WBUR, the pilot is part of BHA’s broader strategy to address building emissions — which account for approximately 70% of Boston’s carbon footprint — while delivering modern comfort to residents. Early results show installations taking under 30 minutes per unit, with meaningful savings compared to conventional heat pump systems. Residents have reported comfortable year-round temperatures and quiet operation.

Vince Romanin, Gradient’s founder and CTO, was quoted in the article describing how this technology can scale across multifamily buildings to improve resident comfort while advancing decarbonization goals.

This pilot reflects Gradient’s mission to accelerate building electrification and deliver practical, equitable solutions that reduce emissions and enhance quality of life — particularly in older buildings where traditional retrofits can be cost-prohibitive.
